So, Interpol reports that out of 2,070 victims identified as potential trafficking victims, the vast majority are women being trafficked for sex. And where’s the outrage from the mainstream media? You’d think that CNN, NBC, and their ilk would lead with furious headlines about this heinous crime against women. Instead, we get “filler” pieces that brush over the urgency of this crisis while swarming you with climate change narratives or debates over meaningless celebrity conflicts.
Can we talk about the hypocrisy here? The same networks that recoil at the mention of gendered violence are quick to hop on the latest social media trend to virtue-signal about feminism. But when it comes to real women—real victims—they’ve decided to turn a blind eye, opting for feel-good stories that distract you from the grim reality.
Look at Fox News, too: they have a knack for covering crime when it fits their narrative. Yet, they sometimes overlook systemic issues like human trafficking that don’t fit neatly into their agenda. Instead of addressing the raw, ugly truth of why our society has become a hunting ground for traffickers, we get sensational headlines that divert the discussion.
Let’s not forget that traffickers thrive on silence and complicity—and that silence is deafening coming from mainstream media. It’s time to wake up; human trafficking is a crisis, not just another news story to rotate in your evening programming. The question remains: will anyone start serious reporting on this issue or continue to let it slip through the cracks?
