‘We escaped Spanish wildfire, but our friends lost their lives’

Firefighters in Spain are putting their lives on the line to battle a wildfire in the southern region, but let’s cut through the sanctimonious reporting. If you turn to CNN or the BBC, you’ll get a mountain of somber platitudes, glossing over the fact that wildfires are becoming a global crisis while they focus on the “human toll” as if that’s all that matters. Sure, human lives are important, but what about the policies that lead to these disasters?

Meanwhile, Fox News will hype it up as a “natural disaster” without a hint of scrutiny on how these fires are exacerbated by climate inaction and mismanagement. They’ll flash dramatic visuals but conveniently avoid discussing the roots of the problem. Why? Because it doesn’t fit neatly into their narrative box of blaming “nature” instead of holding industries and politicians accountable. It’s almost as if they want us worried but distracted.

Everyone loves a great story about heroism, so we’re sold on a rescue narrative, but let’s be real: this is about systemic failure. Instead of real solutions, we get recycled, feel-good headlines. Instead of addressing the climate crisis, they continue to distract us with sensationalism; it’s a shameful but predictable move from these corporate media titans.
