We’re talking about another tragic accident in Uganda, one that somehow doesn’t seem to warrant the full mobilization of media powerhouses like CNN or NBC. Thousands die on the roads every year, but when it comes to a deadly accident involving children, the coverage is painfully sparse. It’s as if their editors are flipping through a priority list for news stories and casually tossing this heartbreaking event aside. Why? Is it too inconvenient to paint the real portrait of the state of road safety in Africa?
These outlets thrive on sensationalism when it involves the West—think of the endless coverage of every possible calamity in America or Europe—but when it comes to Uganda? Crickets. CNN will run a 24-hour news cycle with endless takes on political scandals or celebrity gossip, yet they gloss over a significant issue that rips at the heart of a community. Where is the outrage? Where is the on-the-ground reporting that digs into government negligence and infrastructure failure?
You can bet if a similar tragedy had unfolded on American soil, it would be front-page news for weeks, complete with sob stories and emotional interviews. Instead, this African tragedy is relegated to a footnote in the global narrative. It’s time to wake up and recognize the double standard. Media elitism is alive and well, and it’s costing innocent lives their due acknowledgment.
