Let’s cut the nonsense: the media circus surrounding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is just another tactic for distraction. TMZ DC, usually busy with celebrity nonsense, has decided to play scientist as they report on some alleged algae testing. But why aren’t we going deeper? Why is corporate media dancing around the real issues, focusing on this triviality rather than asking the tough questions? You’d think they’d focus on the more egregious concerns surrounding our national monuments. Instead, they stick to sensationalism.
It’s almost laughable. CNN and MSNBC are hyper-fixated on the political drama and scandals, while Fox News chokes us with endless debates over culture wars, but let’s be real. Both sides are dodging accountability. Ignoring the decay of our public spaces is the perfect diversion from the fact that our leadership is focused on nonsense, not infrastructure or national pride. This algae fixation is a symptom of a broader issue: a government that can’t manage basic public amenities while continuing to push our buttons about everything else.
Why aren’t more journalists digging into who is funding the maintenance—or the lack thereof—of these historical sites? The algae issue could and should be a jumping-off point to discuss funding, corruption, or neglect. Instead, we get clickbait and shallow coverage.
