‘The spectacle Iran wants the world to see’: Lyse Doucet in Tehran

So, here we are: huge crowds in Tehran lining the streets for the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. If you’re expecting the mainstream media to do its job and give us a clear, unvarnished view of this event, think again. Instead, we’re served a smorgasbord of spin—courtesy of CNN and MSNBC, where they’ll sensationalize everything to fit their narrative that Iran is nothing but a hostile regime. Yet, what they fail to highlight is the depth of devotion many Iranians had for Khamenei; it challenges their neatly packaged storyline about a country filled with nothing but dissent and unrest.

On the flip side, Fox News tends to tiptoe around the complexities, portraying Iran primarily through a lens of national security threats. They’ll show the crowds but sprinkle them with fearmongering over nuclear capabilities, rather than asking what this show of solidarity really means for Iranian society. It’s as if they are afraid to confront the reality that, for many, Khamenei was a stabilizing force, regardless of Western perspectives.

This isn’t journalism; it’s agenda-driven commentary. The truth is far more nuanced than these outlets want to admit. This manipulation of information reveals the corporate media’s failure to capture the mixed sentiments in Iran, effectively leaving audiences with a skewed view of a complicated political landscape.
